How to Prepare for Your Massage — and How to Make the Most of It Afterwards
A little preparation before your massage can make a real difference to how much you enjoy and benefit from your treatment. Here is everything you need to know — from what to wear to how to look after yourself once you leave.
How to Prepare for Your Massage — and How to Make the Most of It Afterwards
One of the questions I am asked most often by new clients is: "Is there anything I need to do before I come?" The answer is yes — a little preparation can make a real difference to how much you enjoy and benefit from your treatment. And what you do afterwards matters just as much.
Here is my complete guide to getting the very most from your massage.
Before Your Treatment
Arrival
Please aim to arrive on time for your appointment. This gives you a few minutes to fill out your intake consultation form, use the restroom and begin to settle into the environment before we start. Arriving a little flustered and rushing straight onto the couch means you spend the first part of your treatment just unwinding — and that is time we could be using to work on you.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water before your session. Being well hydrated helps your body process and flush out the metabolic waste that is released from the muscles during massage. It also helps your tissues respond better to the treatment.
Food
Try to avoid eating a large meal for at least one to two hours before your appointment. A full stomach and lying face down on a massage couch is not a comfortable combination! A light snack is absolutely fine if you need something.
Clothing
Wear loose, easy-to-remove clothing to your appointment. You will not need to bring anything special — just something comfortable that you can slip off easily. You may also be asked to remove jewellery, so it is worth leaving anything precious at home.
Hygiene
Taking a warm shower before your appointment is a lovely way to begin relaxing your muscles ahead of the treatment, and it is also a thoughtful courtesy to your therapist. That said, I completely understand that life does not always allow for that — particularly if you are coming straight from work.
For clients attending after a long day, I can provide a large, rinse-free body wipe so you can freshen up before your treatment. Just let me know and I will have one ready for you — no need to feel self-conscious about it at all.
Communication
Before we begin, please let me know about any injuries, medical conditions, areas of tension or discomfort, or anything you would like me to focus on or avoid. This is what the consultation is for, and it is so important. The more I know, the better I can tailor the treatment to your individual needs.
Comfort Level
You only ever need to undress to your own comfort level. Many clients choose to leave their underwear on, and that is absolutely fine. You will be properly draped with a sheet and towel throughout the entire session — only the area being worked on will be uncovered at any time. Your dignity and comfort are always my priority.
Digital Detox
Please turn off or silence your phone before your treatment begins. This is your time — an hour or more of complete, uninterrupted rest. Notifications, buzzing and ringtones are the enemy of relaxation! Switching off, even briefly, is a wonderful gift to give yourself.
After Your Treatment
Stay Hydrated
This is the single most important thing you can do after a massage. Drink plenty of water in the hours following your treatment to help your body flush out the toxins and metabolic waste that have been released from your muscles. You may notice you feel thirsty — that is completely normal.
Rest
Allow your body time to recover and integrate the benefits of the treatment. If you can, avoid rushing straight back into a busy schedule. Even a quiet evening at home makes a real difference to how long the benefits last.
Avoid Intense Exercise
Give your body a break from high-intensity workouts for 12 to 24 hours after your massage. Your muscles have just been worked and need time to recover. Light movement, however, is actively encouraged.
Gentle Movement
Gentle stretching, a slow walk or some light yoga are all wonderful ways to keep the body moving without overdoing it. They help maintain the increased circulation and flexibility that your massage has created.
Eat Lightly
After your treatment, opt for something light and nourishing rather than a heavy meal. Your body is in a state of rest and repair — give it food that supports that process.
Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol
Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol for the rest of the day after your massage. Both can dehydrate you and work against the relaxed, restored state your body is in. Herbal tea and water are your best friends.
